MIMS Desktop - stand-alone vs networked
installation
MIMS Desktop can be installed so that all
the workstations get the drug information from a single server
computer. The advantages of installing
MIMS Desktop in this way are:
- Efficient use
of Hard Disk resources
- Initial installation
is much quicker than performing a stand-alone installation
on each workstation
- Updates are much easier - once the server
image is updated, all the workstations will automatically
use the new information
The disadvantages are:
- The initial installation is not as straightforward
as a simple stand-alone installation
- Security settings on the server may affect
the outcome (you may need to be a network administrator
to rectify this)
- Performance is a little slower (depending
on the network resources available to you)
- You must know the location of the existing
Server image to place updated files in the same place
- Troubleshooting is more difficult
Is a networked MIMS Desktop installation
for me?
If you only have a couple of computers and
the term Network Neighborhood scares you, then perhaps not.
You don't have to do a Network Installation just because your
computers are networked. It may be easier to just do a stand-alone
installation on each of your computers.

How do I tell
if I have a networked or stand-alone installation?
You should look at the shortcut that you
use to run MIMS Desktop. The shortcut may be located on the
desktop, or in the Start menu. Instead of following the shortcut,
you should right-click on it and choose Properties from the
context menu.
Some Windows versions let you right-click
on short-cuts directly in the Start menu, but with older versions,
you will need to navigate to the actual shortcut to see the
details. Right-click on the Start button. Choose Open All
Users. Double-click on Programs. Double-click on the Folder
labelled MIMS New Zealand 4.0, then right-click on the short-cut.
Look at the Shortcut tab, and note the Target.
If it is
C:\Program Files\UBM Medica\New Zealand\MIMSdesktop\MIMSdesk.EXE
then you definitely do NOT have a network install. This is
the default location for a stand-alone version of MIMS Desktop.
A network install will have something like \\MainSvr\Cdrive\MIMSdesk\MIMSdesk\MIMSdesk.EXE
(where MainSvr is the network name of the File Server computer),
or maybe G:\MIMSdesk\MIMSdesk\MIMSdesk.EXE (where G: is a
mapped drive to \\MainSvr\Cdrive).
Additional resource information
There are a number of technical resource
articles on your MIMS Desktop CD. Explore the CD and navigate
to UTIL/MRINDEX0.HTM. You can also view these articles on
the MIMS
Australia website. Note that terminology between MIMS
New Zealand and Australia is slightly different - the Australian
version of MIMS Desktop (NZ) is named E-MIMS.
